One of the busiest and most fun weekends of the year on the Monterey Peninsula is almost here. Thousands of runners are coming to town for the Monterey Bay Half Marathon weekend, and much of the action happens right along the Pacific Grove coastline, just steps from our condominium suites.
Here's what guests and owners staying with us this week should know.
Saturday, November 7: Races at Lovers Point
Race weekend starts Saturday morning with the shorter races: the By-the-Bay 3K at 8:00 AM and the Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K at 8:30 AM. Both start and finish on Ocean View Boulevard at Lovers Point Park, a short walk from the resort. If you like the energy of a race without running one, it's a great spot to cheer from the sidelines, and the Pacific Grove Kiwanis host a $10 pancake breakfast in the park.
Sunday, November 8: The Monterey Bay Half Marathon
The main event starts at 7:00 AM Sunday in downtown Monterey. Runners head down Cannery Row, loop through downtown Pacific Grove on Lighthouse and Central Avenues, right past the resort, then follow the coast on Ocean View Boulevard out to Asilomar and back. With ocean views most of the way, it's one of the most beautiful race courses anywhere.
Plan around road closures
There will be road closures and parking restrictions in our area on both mornings. Here's what the race organizers have announced for Pacific Grove:
- Saturday, November 7: Ocean View Boulevard and Sunset Drive are closed in both directions from Lovers Point to Point Pinos, from about 6:00 to 10:00 AM. No parking on the waterfront from 4:00 to 10:00 AM.
- Sunday, November 8: Ocean View Boulevard and Sunset Drive are closed in both directions from Eardley Avenue to Asilomar, from about 6:00 to 10:00 AM. No waterfront parking from 4:00 to 10:00 AM.
- Sunday, near the resort: no parking from 4:00 to 9:00 AM on the westbound side of Lighthouse Avenue between Fountain and Congress, on Fountain Avenue, on 17th Street, and on Central Avenue between Congress and 17th. Between 7:00 and 8:45 AM, drivers in the blocks between Fountain and 16th can only leave at Central and Fountain, by the library, and should expect delays.
A few tips to make the weekend easy
- If you need to drive Sunday morning, head out before the closures start or plan to wait until about 10:00 AM.
- Parked on the street? Check the posted signs on Saturday night so your car isn't in a no-parking zone.
- Checking in or out this weekend? Call the front desk ahead of time and we'll help you plan the best timing.
- Leave the car parked and walk. Downtown Pacific Grove, the coastline and Lovers Point are all close by, and our Guest Directory has local favorites.
